Nov 4 Friday 8:15-10:30pm, Irvine:
Capitalism: A Love Story
examines the impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans (and by default, the rest of the world). The film moves from Middle America, to the halls of power in Washington, to the global financial epicenter in Manhattan. With both humor and outrage, the film explores the question: What is the price that America pays for its love of capitalism? Families pay the price with their jobs, their homes and their savings. Moore goes into the homes of ordinary people whose lives have been turned upside down; and he goes looking for explanations in Washington, DC and elsewhere. What he finds are the all-too-familiar symptoms of a love affair gone astray: lies, abuse, betrayal...and 14,000 jobs being lost every day. Capitalism: A Love Story also presents what a more hopeful future could look like. Who are we and why do we behave the way that we do?
This movie is being presented by Occupy Orange County CA as part of their educational outreach.
Thank you to the Irvine United Congregational Church for providing the space to view the movie.

Occupy OC (Santa Ana) Art Walk/Day of the Dead
In addition to the annual Día de los Muertos Festival & The monthly Art Walk in Down Town Santa Ana, Occupy Orange County will be meeting up at the above location to lead an ordered and silent procession alongside the Día de los Muertos festival and through the streets of Down Town Santa Ana.
We have printed beautiful shirts (guys & gals) and will be walking in an organized, solidified movement holding candles in silence to help spread awareness of our presence in Santa Ana and motivate the wonderful members of our community to join us in this worldwide occupation.
Face painting in the spirit of Día de los Muertos and Guy Fawkes (we have decided to do one side of the face with each design to merge the two noble causes) will start at 5pm. Make up artists have donated their time, talent, & materials just for US!
A casual rehearsal of the procession/silent vigil will start during the face painting and shortly after, to make sure no on is in the dark about how to move as ONE BODY, ONE MOVEMENT, ONE STRUGGLE. ♥

Nov 6 (1st Sunday) 7:30am-5pm, Huntington Beach:
Arlington West Memorial
Our continuing efforts to remind the public of the cost of our wars and to
"bring Our Troops Home", keeps rolling along as we've passed 6,000 official
casualties in the current Asian conflicts. Arlington West Huntington Beach
will be setup again this Sunday. Please come help or at least visit.
We no longer have to load the crosses in the morning. Meet at the beach at
7:30AM to help unload the trailer and setup the crosses or 5:00PM to help take
it down.
Volunteers:
We usually need the most help in the morning, though both morning and evening
are critical.
We meet up at the beach around/after 7:20 and start the setup of the field of
crosses and other items. Depending upon number of helpers this can take 30
minutes or over two hours. "Many hands make for light and fast work". Take down
goes much quicker than setup. We are back to our regular schedule for
breakdown, so should start breakdown about 5:00PM and hopefully have everything
back in the trailer before 6:00.
Please let me know if you are coming this Sunday by replying to arncomp@pacbell.net, but you of course are welcome without replying first.

Support the UCI 19 at Trial
Central Justice Center,
700 Civic Center Drive West
On February 24, 2010, 17 UCI students and community supporters sat in outside Chancellor Drake's office, issuing demands for workers rights on campus, increased access for underrepresented students, and amnesty for the Irvine 11. They were quickly arrested and evicted from the building by dozens of police without a single administrator offering to hear their demands.
Nine months later, those 17, along with 2 students who were outside Aldrich Hall during the action, received criminal charges by mail. After months of hearings and attempts at reaching a plea, the UCI 19 are headed to trial, beginning September 27. Over 19 months since the initial incident. The 17 are being charged with trespassing, disturbing the peace, and refusal to disperse. The other two are being charged with false imprisonment, blocking a thoroughfare, and being a public nuisance. Everyone potentially faces over a year in jail if convicted.
Don't let UCI and the DA criminalize dissent! Demand that all the charges be dropped!
We're counting on your support to beat the charges. A strong showing of campus and community support on the first day of trial will send the message to the DA and the court that we're here to fight.
Trial officially begins at 8:30am though it never starts on time. Please try to come as early as you are able to. It will also not likely conclude on the first day, but will instead be drawn out, so please also pay attention for future dates.

There will be an emergency meeting to discuss UCI's response to intense police violence across the UC campuses (UC Davis, UC Berkeley, and UCLA in particular). This will also be an organizing meeting to prepare for the upcoming UC Regents meeting. Links are posted below. Spread the word.
"The Regents meeting that was canceled due to student and worker participation has been rescheduled to Nov 28, to be held by teleconferenced locations at UCSF-Mission Bay, UC Davis, UCLA, UC Merced, and Florida.
They are voting on the 2012-2013 expenditures and budget, deferring and forcing student fee increases to a later meeting this year.
UCI!! Let's organize and get folks out to UCLA! Tell your friends who are near Davis, SF, Merced, and Florida (if you can mobilize from across the country)."

As you probably have heard, the Redondo Beach day laborers won their litigation with the city, which is good news for us in Costa Mesa. However, now that the Redondo Beach case has been settled, we are entering the new phase of litigation in Costa Mesa. We need help getting the word out and mobilizing the plaintiffs in this suit. This Is What Democracy Looks Like
This amazing documentary, using film shot by 100 citizen journalists, covers the 1999 protest of the World Trade Organization in Seattle, Washington. What really happened? The media covering those amazing days reported riots and property damage. The police said they "exercised remarkable restraint" and "did not use tear gas". What is clear is that an unprecedented coalition of labor, environmental, and human rights activists converged on the city of Seattle and shut the WTO down. Find out what happened in THEIR words.

Occupy OC (Irvine) Friday Night Movie: Zeitgeist - Moving Forward
by director Peter Joseph, is a feature length documentary work which presents a case for a transition out of the current socioeconomic monetary paradigm which governs the entire world society.
This subject matter transcends the issues of cultural relativism and traditional ideology and moves to relate the core, empirical "life ground" attributes of human and social survival, extrapolating those immutable natural laws into a new sustainable social paradigm called a "Resource-Based Economy".

Dec 4 (1st Sunday) 7:30am-5pm, Huntington Beach:
Arlington West Memorial
Apologies again to anyone that tried to come to AW last month. There is nothing
on the Huntington Beach calendar that should interfere with our setup this
month, though some may enjoy the "Light A Light of Love - Pier Lighting Ceremony
and Holiday Parade " that will take place between 4 and 7PM (parade should get
to lower Main street after we've packed up). Weather forecast is for a slight
overcast and a high around 63.
Our continuing efforts to remind the public of the cost of our wars and to
"bring Our Troops Home", keeps rolling along even as we look forward to the
removal of the last 'combat troops' from Iraq this month. Come help or just
visit.
We no longer have to load the crosses in the morning. Meet at the beach at
7:30AM to help unload the trailer and setup the crosses or 4:30PM to help take
it down.
We need to remind the public of the continuing conflicts and sacrifices, as well
as being there for service members and families in need of help.
Due to the short days we will likely start
breakdown a bit earlier at about 4:30PM and hopefully have everything back in
the trailer before 5:15.
Please let me know if you are coming this Sunday by replying to
arncomp@pacbell.net, but you, of course, are welcome without replying first.

By supporting our holiday dinner, you'll ensure we can purchase and deliver a new set of "herstory" gazettes in 2012 as well as host three new events. Those events include a film screening and Q&A session with the filmmakers from a fascinating new documentary, "No Girls Allowed" which chronicles a group of women who in 1983 went all the way to the Supreme Court to win admittance to an all boys public high school. We'll also host an informational program entitled, "Do you know what you're putting in and on your body" with experts from the FDA and industry watchdog groups. And because 2012 is going to be such an important election year, we'll collaborate with other local women's groups and polling experts to discuss how to message choice here in Orange County.

Kick-Off for CA DISCLOSE Act (to reveal political big donors)
After Citizens United, what can we do (besides amend the US Constitution)? One fine step is to help pass the Calif. DISCLOSE Act. It'll require political ads in all media and mail, for or against a Calif. candidate or initiative, to disclose big donors to an ad, in the ad itself, in a statement of approval like those candidates must now make. It'll stop those donors from hiding behind phony front groups' bland names. Invited to this Kickoff are those who wish to learn about the DISCLOSE Act, especially if willing to consider giving 1 hr./week, or more, to "work teams" doing jobs supporting lobbying for the Act, such as phoning of many kinds, "tabling", arranging for groups to hear our speakers, speaking, data input, etc. Kickoff co-sponsors include Calif. Clean Money Campaign and local hosts Concerned Citizens and Laguna Woods Democratic Club

2012
JANUARY
hideJan 1 (1st Sunday) 7:30am-5pm, Huntington Beach:
Arlington West Memorial
The first Sunday of the January and the first day of the year coincide for 2012. We will be setting up Arlington West again in Huntington Beach. We hope we can have the help of you and other friends.
Another first Sunday is coming up and we are still deployed and fighting in Afghanistan in America's longest war, so there will be another Arlington West in Huntington Beach. Please help if you can but if your schedule doesn't permit that please consider coming by to visit if that's possible.
Weather forecast is for clear skies and a high of 70. Great Southern California New Year's weather. (Note: Rose Parade is on Monday on years like this when New Year's day is on a Sunday).
Our continuing efforts to remind the public of the cost of our wars and to "bring Our Troops Home" continues. Come help or just visit.
We no longer have to load the crosses in the morning. Meet at the beach at 7:30AM to help unload the trailer and setup the crosses or 4:30PM to help take it down.
We need to remind the public of the continuing conflicts and sacrifices, as well as being there for service members and families in need of help.
We meet up at the beach around/after 7:20 and start the setup of the field of
crosses and other items. Depending upon number of helpers this can take 30
minutes or over two hours. "Many hands make for light and fast work". Take down
goes much quicker than setup. Due to the short days we will likely start
breakdown a bit earlier at about 4:30PM and hopefully have everything back in
the trailer before 5:15.
Please let me know if you are coming this Sunday by replying to
arncomp@pacbell.net, but you, of course, are welcome without replying first.

"Bakhita: From Slave to Saint"
Born in Olgossa in the Darfur region of southern Sudan, Josephine was kidnapped at the age of seven and sold into slavery. She was re-sold several times. For many years, Josephine Bakhita was a slave but her spirit was always free and eventually that spirit prevailed. At a later time, Bakhita felt drawn to the Catholic Church; she was baptized and confirmed in 1890, taking the name Josephine. Josephine's body was mutilated by those who enslaved her, but they could not touch her inner spirit. Her Baptism set her on an eventual path toward asserting her civic freedom and then service to God's people as a Canossian sister. Pope John Paul II declared her a saint in the year 2000.

in the Irvine Occupation Village,
Irvine Civic Center, 1 Civic Center Drive, Irvine, CA 92606

Our movement has woken Americans up to the realities of elite power and the need to make a world that works for the people, not the powerful few.
BUT how will we move forward when the permanent camps are cleared? How will we blend in person and online organizing while preserving pure democracy and continuing to capture the interest and imagination of the broader public? How will we persuade the rest of the 99% that there ARE alternatives and we are formulating them?
RECLAIM this movement, don't let authorities or provocateurs write our last chapter. See you there!

OCYD Endorsement Meeting
After the passage of Proposition 14 in June 2010, elections in California will now follow an open primary system in which only the top two vote-getters advance, even if they are from the same political party. Because of the need for OCYD to potentially lend support to it's endorsed candidates earlier than it normally would and with the California Democratic Party Annual Convention this February, OCYD has decided to consider early endorsements in select races.
Below, you will find the list of races that we will endorse in:
* 45th Congressional District
* 46th Congressional District
* 47th Congressional District
* 69th Assembly District
* 72nd Assembly District
To obtain OCYD's endorsement, candidates must obtain 60% of the vote of present eligible members. Voting will take place by secret ballot. Each candidate will have 5 minutes to address our membership before the vote.To check if you are eligible to vote, please email us at info@ocyd.org to confirm your membership status.
Candidates seeking OCYD's endorsement have the opportunity to submit a 250 statement by no later than Monday, January 9th. These statements will be emailed to our membership on Tuesday, January 10th. They will also appear on the printed ballots. Please submit statements to jose@ocyd.org.
If a candidate seeking OCYD's endorsement cannot attend the meeting they may send a representative to speak on their behalf. Representatives of a candidate must be submitted to jose@ocyd.org prior to the meeting by an official campaign representative.

Jan 14 Saturday 2pm, Laguna Woods:
Calif. DISCLOSE Act briefing, then calling
After Citizens United, what can we do (besides amend the US Constitution)? One fine step is to help pass the Calif. DISCLOSE Act.
It'll require political ads in all media, for or against a candidate or initiative, to disclose big donors to the ads in the donor's "approval statement" in the ad itself, like what a candidate must do.
It'll stop those donors from hiding behind phony front groups' bland names. Invited to this briefing, then phoning, are those who wish to learn about the DISCLOSE Act, especially if willing to consider giving 1 hr./week, or more, to "work teams" doing jobs supporting lobbying for the Act, such as phoning of many kinds, "tabling", arranging for groups to hear our speakers, speaking, data input, etc. Co-sponsors include Calif. Clean Money Campaign and local hosts Concerned Citizens and Laguna Woods Democratic Club. Bring a cellphone and/or laptop, if you have either, for the meeting's calling part.
To read up on the Calif. DISCLOSE Act, click here to visit YesFairElections.org Home page.
Note: LW Village is gated; for gate entry please either: (1) Click here to register online for event (preferred). Or, (2) RSVP (or for more info) to: Jonathan Adler, 949-581-2178, or by email LawGuruLaguna@yahoo.com.

n the spring of 2003 Russell, Bobby Bailey and Laren Poole, traveled to Africa in search of a story. What started out as a filmmaking adventure transformed into the discovery of a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them, a tragedy where children are both the weapons and the victims.
After returning to the United States, the three created a documentary Invisible Children: Rough Cut, a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda's night commuters and child soldiers, and from the popularity of the film, Invisible Children, Inc. was born.

MoveOn: "Yes he can?" Event/rally
Democratic Party HQ Main St. between 1st and 3rd in Santa Ana
At the end of 2011, Big Banks doled out $156 billion-yes, BILLION!-in bonuses and had foreclosed on over 350,000 homes. Wall Street banks must be held fully accountable for the damage they've caused, including a full investigation into bank practices during the housing crisis and appropriate compensation for homeowners who've suffered because of the banks' malpractice. The president has the power to order this today and start the year with a real win for the 99% movement. The negotiations between the state attorneys general and the White House have been happening mostly away from the public eye. So it's up to us to make sure the president hears loud, clear, and right away that progressives are counting on him to keep taking bold action. That's why on January 19-a week before his State of the Union address-we'll gather at Obama for America offices in all 50 states for "Yes He Can!" events. We'll let the president know that we have his back-so that he can stand strong and make
sure Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, and other Big Banks are held accountable. This is our chance to get concrete improvements for the 99%. Can you help make it happen?

Future of Food Film and GMO Labeling Discussion
Community Room, Community Center, University Hills, 1083 California Ave., Irvine 92617
GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) foods are not labeled in America even though this is information that most Americans say they would prefer to have about the food they are eating.
SFOC will be co-sponsoring a session featuring the showing of the film "The Future of Food," a 90-minute documentary exploring the issue of GMOs made by Deborah Koons Garcia.
Following the film, Kerne Erickson, the OC local organizer, will discuss an effort in California to put an initiative on the November ballot that would require labeling on foods to indicate whether they contain GMOs. See previous article for more information.
Available for purchase and eating during the film, various unique and exciting gourmet delights showcasing local organic seasonal non-GMO foods will be prepared by Raya Belna, a Food Network award-winning Chef.
Seating is limited. Reservations highly recommended. Please email Ted Wright (twright4SF@gmail.com) with the number in your party.

Take Back UCI General Meeting - Strategizing and Scheming
The public education crisis is expanding. At the January 19th meeting of the UC Regents we saw the police fire projectiles into a crowd, violently defending the increasing privatization of the UC. The Regents went so far as to suggest that UCSF, the medical goldmine, sever ties with the rest of the UC system.
We also saw the students and workers fighting back against the cuts and fee increases. So far this year they have not been able to raise fees despite their clear intentions to do so.
So, again, we meet in Humanities Hall 105, Monday at 7pm to hatch our bold plans around the specifics of the Irvine situation.

Stop million-dollar Anaheim tax giveaway
Last week, the Anaheim City Council voted to give an unprecedented $158 million tax subsidy to the developer of two planned four-star hotels in Anaheim's GardenWalk - a developer who is a campaign contributor to members of the City Council. The giveaway of our tax dollars is particularly troubling when you consider that earlier this year, the Council cut $1 million from the library budget, forcing early closures and the elimination of programs aimed at helping our children.
We may only have one chance to tell the City Council to change its bad priorities. Anaheim residents elected the City Council to protect our city services, such as libraries and public safety, not to give away our tax dollars to wealthy developers.
The City Council is holding an emergency meeting Tuesday night to reconsider the $158 million hotel tax giveaway.
Please come to tell the City Council to rescind their multi-million dollar giveaway.
The meeting is at 5 p.m. at Anaheim City Hall, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
Sincerely,
Heart of Anaheim

Laguna City Council Support Needed
505 Forest Avenue,
Laguna Beach, California 92651
Please attend the City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 7, at 6:00 PM. Our Council will be considering taking action on a letter received from the City Council of San Clemente regarding San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
In October after two public meetings about San Onofre, the Council pass a resolution 5-0 regarding safety issues, and calling for the removal radioactive waste stored on site before any re-licensing is granted. San Onofre is asking the NRC for a 20 yr. license extension. Letters were sent to a number of elected officials including all the City Councils in Orange County. San Clemente asks that all councils join them calling for the removal of the high level radioactive used nuclear fuel, and swift action on safety issues brought to light since the nuclear power accident at Fukushika, Japan. This issue is placed on the agenda by Verna Rollinger and supported by Toni Iseman and Jane Egly. Please wear something green to show your support.

Concerned Citizens of Laguna Woods Village - David Cobb:
Are Corporations "Persons"?
Must We Amend OUR Constitution?
Clubhouse 7,
Gather and Greet at 6:30 PM
On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government. Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions.
We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United, and move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.
The Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on the law. In a democracy, the people rule. We Move to Amend.
David Cobb is National Projects Director of Democracy Unlimited. He is a lawyer, political activist, and engaged citizen. He has sued corporate polluters, lobbied elected officials, run for political office himself, and has been arrested for non-violent civil disobedience. He truly believes we must use ALL the tools in the toolbox to effect the systemic social change we so desperately need.
In 2002, David ran for Attorney General of Texas, pledging to use the office to revoke the charters of corporations that repeatedly violate health, safety and environmental laws. He did not win the office, but the Green Party of Texas grew dramatically during his campaign from four local chapters to twenty-six. In 2004, he ran for President of the United States on the Green Party ticket and successfully campaigned for the Ohio recount.
David Cobb is also a spokesperson for Move To Amend, a national coalition calling for a constitutional amendment to abolish "Corporate Personhood," which is the legal doctrine that allows corporations to overturn democratically enacted laws seeking to protect citizens from corporate harm and abuse.
